Strawberry lemonade is one of those summer drinks I look forward to every year, especially when strawberries are at their peak. This shaken version takes that classic flavor and gives it a fun, state fair-style twist, just like the kind made fresh right in the cup.
Instead of mixing everything ahead of time, each drink comes together on the spot. Fresh lemon pieces and strawberries get smashed with sugar until juicy and syrupy, then topped with ice and water and shaken until perfectly chilled.
There’s no separate strawberry syrup to make or buy here, everything happens right in the cup with the lemons!
Each serving uses a whole lemon, so you get that bright, bold citrus flavor in every sip, balanced with sweet strawberries. The bits of fruit floating in the glass give it that nostalgic fair feel, like something you’d grab on a hot afternoon and sip while walking around in the sun.
This state fair-style strawberry lemonade is simple, refreshing, and has that easy, summery vibe. I end up making this a lot around the 4th of July or on those long hot days when my grandsons are over.
Why You’ll Love This Strawberry Lemonade
This strawberry lemonade is a little different than the usual pitcher version, and that’s exactly why it’s so good.
- Made fresh right in the cup, just like at the fair, so every glass tastes extra fresh
- Uses real lemons and strawberries, nothing artificial
- Extra bright and citrusy since you’re using the whole lemon, not just the juice
- Sweet, tart, and really refreshing, with that classic fair-style flavor
- Easy to turn into a DIY drink station for parties, which is honestly half the fun
- A great way to use up fresh, in-season strawberries when you have a bunch on hand
If you love classic fair-style drinks, my State Fair Lemonade is the original version without strawberries.
And if you’re looking for something you can make ahead in a pitcher, my Fresh Strawberry Lemonade has that same sweet, fruity flavor made with homemade strawberry syrup.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
Lemons
Use fresh lemons only. Since the peel goes into the drink, give them a good wash first. That’s what gives this lemonade its bold, bright flavor.
Strawberries
Look for strawberries that are red all the way through with no white or pale spots near the top. Those tend to be sweeter and have better flavor. Fresh is definitely best here since you’re smashing them right into the drink.
Sugar
Regular granulated sugar gives you that classic fair-style sweetness and helps pull the juice out of the fruit as you muddle.
Water
Filtered water is best if you have it, since it really lets the lemon and strawberry flavor shine through.
Ice
I like to use regular ice cubes because they melt a little slower and don’t water the drink down as quickly. Crushed ice or nugget ice works too, just know it’ll dilute things faster as you sip.
Want a Smoother Strawberry Lemonade?
If you prefer no pulp or seeds, try using homemade strawberry syrup or strawberry puree instead. It gives you the same flavor with a smoother finish.
How to Cut the Fruit for Single Serve Strawberry Lemonade
Since everything gets muddled by hand, I find it a lot easier to work with smaller pieces. You can keep things a little bigger, but breaking it down more upfront saves some elbow grease later.
Cutting the Lemons
Instead of slicing straight through the center, cut off the cheeks of the lemon first. Then trim the pulpy sides off the center column so you’re left with pieces that are mostly peel and pulp.
From there, you can leave them as 8 wedges, but I like to cut each wedge in half so I end up with about 16 smaller pieces. They’re easier to smash and release more juice that way.
Cutting the Strawberries
Hull the strawberries, then cut them into quarters. You can stop there, but I like to chop those pieces in half again so they break down faster when muddling.
How to Make State Fair Strawberry Lemonade
- Start with clean fruit.
Since the peels go right into the drink, give your lemons a good scrub. - Cut the lemons and strawberries.
Slice the lemon into wedges (8 wedges cut in half for smaller pieces) and remove any visible seeds. Hull the strawberries (remove the stems and leaves), then cut them (quartered, then chopped in half) so they’re nice and small. - Add everything to your cup.
Add the lemons and strawberries first, then the sugar right on top. - Smash it all together.
This is the fun part. Press and twist until the lemons release their juice and the strawberries are mostly broken down. It should look juicy and a little rustic. - Add ice and water.
Fill it up, but leave a little space at the top so you can shake. - Lid on, then shake.
Give it a really good shake. Like the kind where your arm gets a little tired. - Pop in a straw and drink right away.
This is the secret to fair-style lemonade
The magic is in smashing the whole lemon, peel and all. That’s where the bold, slightly citrus oil flavor comes from.

State Fair Strawberry Lemonade FAQs
Can I use frozen strawberries?
Yes, but they need to be fully thawed first. Let them sit in the fridge overnight or microwave in short bursts until softened.
Can I make this ahead of time?
This single-serve lemonade is best made fresh right before drinking. If you want to get ahead, you can cut the fruit and portion everything out so it’s ready to go. You can also add the lemons, strawberries, and sugar to the cups ahead of time and let it sit a bit so everything starts to get juicy before the final smash.
