Refreshing, vibrant, and thirst-quenching, this blueberry lemonade brings together two favorites of summer: blueberries and lemonade.

There’s nothing better than a cold glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade on a hot day. I still remember the first time I had it at Disney World when I was a kid in the late 70s. It was hot, muggy Florida weather, and that icy lemonade absolutely hit the spot.

This version takes that classic drink and adds juicy blueberries for a gorgeous purplish color and a sweet-tart berry flavor that makes every sip even better.

It’s the perfect drink for summer picnics, potlucks, or the Fourth of July. The best part is you can make it anytime using frozen blueberries, which are often just as flavorful as fresh ones!

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Lemons
Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best homemade lemonade. Look for lemons that feel heavy for their size and have thin, fragrant skin. These tend to be the juiciest. Bottled lemon juice will not give you the same fresh flavor.

Blueberries
You can use fresh or frozen blueberries for this blueberry lemonade recipe. My preference is frozen wild blueberries because they are picked and frozen at peak ripeness. They also have a more concentrated flavor which almost gives the lemonade the taste of cran-grape.

If you’re using fresh blueberries, try to buy them when they are in season and flavorful. If the berries look dull or bland in the produce section, frozen is usually the better option.

Another Way to Use Frozen Wild Blueberries: If you love the flavor of frozen wild blueberries, try my Wild Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie. It blends blueberries, oats, and yogurt into a creamy breakfast smoothie that tastes a little like a blueberry muffin.

Sugar
Regular white granulated sugar works perfectly for the blueberry syrup. It dissolves easily and keeps the flavor clean and bright.

Water
Since water is the largest component of lemonade, filtered water gives the crispest flavor. A simple Brita filter pitcher works great for this.

How to Make Blueberry Lemonade

Detailed recipe and instructions are in recipe card at bottom of post.

Note: I recommend making this in a glass pitcher since blueberry stains plastic.

Squeeze the Fresh Lemon Juice

Roll the lemons firmly on the counter to help release their juices. Cut them in half across the middle and squeeze using a citrus juicer or reamer. Measure out the lemon juice and set it aside.

Make the Blueberry Juice

Add the blueberries and 1 ¼ cups water to a small saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for about 10 minutes. As the berries soften, smash them gently with the back of a spoon to release their juices. The berries will become pale as their color transfers to the liquid.

Remove from the heat.

Strain the Blueberry Juice

Pour the blueberry mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a heat-proof container.

Press gently on the berry pulp to extract as much juice as possible. This concentrated blueberry juice will be the base for the syrup.

Make the Blueberry Simple Syrup

Rinse the saucepan to remove any remaining pulp. Return the strained blueberry juice to the pan and place it over medium heat.

Add an equal amount of sugar based on how much juice you collected. If you have 1 cup juice, add 1 cup sugar. If you have 1 ¼ cups juice, add 1 ¼ cups sugar.

Stir until the sugar dissolves completely, about 1–2 minutes.

Assemble the Blueberry Lemonade

Pour the blueberry syrup into a large pitcher that holds at least 2 quarts. For extra clarity, you can pour it through a strainer again.

Add the fresh lemon juice and about 4 cups cold filtered water. Stir well. The lemonade should reach about 2 quarts total.

Chill and Serve

Refrigerate the blueberry lemonade for a few hours until thoroughly chilled.

Serve over ice in glasses rather than adding ice directly to the pitcher so the flavor stays strong. Garnish with fresh blueberries or lemon slices if desired.

My Method for Making Blueberry Syrup for Lemonade

There are several ways to add blueberry flavor to lemonade, but I prefer a method that gives the cleanest texture and the most control over sweetness.

Some recipes blend blueberries with sugar and strain them, but this can leave a slightly gritty texture if the sugar does not dissolve completely. Others cook the berries, sugar, and water together all at once, which works but makes it harder to control the sugar ratio.

My approach is simple. First, I cook the blueberries with water to create a concentrated blueberry juice. After straining the berries, I measure the juice and add an equal amount of sugar. This creates a perfect one-to-one simple syrup that dissolves smoothly and does not leave extra sugary pulp behind.

It’s an easy extra step that makes a big difference in texture and flavor.

This same syrup technique also works well for other berries. My homemade strawberry syrup, raspberry syrup, and peach syrup all use a similar method and are great for lemonades, iced teas, and cocktails.

Recipe Notes & Tips for Blueberry Lemonade

Adjust the tartness
Taste the lemonade before chilling. If you prefer it more tart, add a little extra lemon juice. I always buy a few extra lemons for this reason.

Make sparkling blueberry lemonade
For a bubbly version, combine the blueberry syrup and lemon juice first. Fill ice-filled glasses halfway with the mixture, then top with sparkling water.

Sprite blueberry lemonade
For a sweeter drink that tastes almost like punch, replace some or all of the water with Sprite.

Storage
Store the lemonade in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Double straining the syrup helps keep the pulp out for a longer-lasting lemonade.

Make-ahead tip
This lemonade actually tastes even better after a few hours in the refrigerator once the flavors have blended.
