This strawberry cottage cheese smoothie has become one of my favorite ways to pack more protein into my diet. It’s creamy, sweet, and fresh, and I love that my morning drink can hit 31 grams of protein with just a few simple ingredients.
I’ll admit I was skeptical about blending cottage cheese into a smoothie at first, but the combination of strawberries, cottage cheese, and a frozen ripe banana creates a texture that’s smooth and drinkable. Cottage cheese is one of my favorite lean protein sources, and I love that it works in smoothies.
Not to mention, this strawberry smoothie fits into the cottage cheese “trend” happening right now. Honestly it feels more like a rediscovery. I remember diners serving cottage cheese with fruit on top, and I still love a bowl with cling peaches. (That combo is definitely a future smoothie.)
Because cottage cheese is so neutral in flavor, the strawberries really shine here, and a splash of vanilla brings everything together in a way that feels just a little extra.
Why You’ll Love This Strawberry Cottage Cheese Smoothie
- Naturally high in protein without any protein powder
- Uses simple ingredients you probably already have
- Creamy and drinkable texture
- Perfect for using those very ripe bananas you’ve stashed in the freezer
- Easy to make in a personal cup blender (I use a Ninja and it works perfectly)
Ingredients Needed
- Cottage cheese
- Milk
- Strawberries (fresh or frozen)
- Frozen banana
- Vanilla
- Flaxseed meal (optional)
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Ingredient Notes
Cottage Cheese
I use small curd 2 percent cottage cheese. It blends easily and gives a smooth finish. Whole milk cottage cheese works too, but expect a thicker, richer smoothie. If using large curd, just blend long enough until all the pieces break down.
Milk
Ultra-filtered dairy milk is my go-to because it contains more protein per ounce and a bit less sugar. Lactose-free versions work just as well. You can read more about why I like this kind of milk, in my peanut butter banana protein smoothie recipe.
Strawberries
You can use fresh or frozen strawberries. At least one fruit should be frozen so the smoothie is extra cold and has the right texture. If both the strawberries and banana are frozen, the smoothie will be thicker. I like to toss in a few very ripe fresh berries when I have them because they make the strawberry flavor pop.
Frozen Banana
Freeze bananas when they’re very ripe with lots of brown spots. Peel, slice into chunks, freeze on a tray for about 30 minutes, then store in a freezer bag. These bananas sweeten the smoothie naturally.
Vanilla
Just a splash adds warmth and dimension.
Optional Extras
- Flaxseed meal adds healthy omega-3s and a little protein
- A pinch of salt balances the sweetness from the fruit
Try My Strawberry Banana Smoothie with Chia Seeds
This creamy Greek-yogurt based strawberry smoothie has about 25 grams of protein and a boost of fiber from chia seeds. It’s another great option if you like naturally sweet, berry-forward smoothies.
How to Make a Strawberry Cottage Cheese Smoothie
Detailed recipe and instructions are in recipe card at bottom of post.
- Add the milk to your blender first. In a personal cup blender you can use the measuring lines to gauge the liquid.
- Add the strawberries, frozen banana, vanilla and any optional ingredients.
- Add the cottage cheese on top. When you flip the blender cup over, the cottage cheese lands closest to the blades which helps everything blend smoothly.
- Blend on the smoothie setting if your blender has one. It starts and stops so the frozen fruit settles around the blades.
- Finish with an additional 15 to 30 seconds of blending to make sure every little cottage cheese piece becomes smooth.
I use a personal cup Ninja blender for all my smoothies and it handles frozen fruit beautifully. You don’t need a high-speed blender for this recipe.
Blend Cottage Cheese Smoothies a Little Longer
Cottage cheese blends smoothly, but giving it a few extra seconds at the end ensures any tiny curds completely disappear. This is the key to getting that velvety drinkable texture.
Recipe Notes
- If both fruits are frozen, you’ll get a thicker texture. Add a splash of extra milk if needed. Or just use half a banana.
- Adjust sweetness based on the ripeness of the banana. Very ripe bananas make the smoothie naturally sweet.
- Ultra-filtered milk will give you the highest protein count per serving.
- A smaller smoothie using ½ cup cottage cheese and ½ cup milk still lands around 20+ grams of protein.
- Counting calories? Cut 100 calories from this recipe by making it with ½ cup cottage cheese, ½ cup milk and half a banana.
Strawberry Cottage Cheese Smoothie Freezer Pack
One of my favorite ways to make busy mornings easier is by prepping a freezer pack for this smoothie. Everything is portioned and ready to go when you’re ready for a quick breakfast blend.
How to Make It:
- Add the flaxseed meal and salt to a small freezer-safe bag.
- Add the frozen strawberries and banana pieces (cut a very ripe banana into 1-inch chunks before freezing).
- Seal the bag and freeze until ready to use.
To Blend:
Pour the contents of the freezer pack into your blender, then add cottage cheese, milk, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and creamy.
Cottage Cheese in Smoothies
Cottage cheese and Greek yogurt work almost interchangeably in fruit smoothies, but they each bring something different.
Cottage Cheese
- Slightly higher in protein
- A little more calorie-dense
- Neutral flavor
- Creates a smooth, milkshake-like texture
- A little saltier, which can help balance fruity sweetness
Greek Yogurt
- Nearly as much protein
- Less calorie-dense
- Contains probiotics
- Tangier flavor that some people prefer
- Creates a thick drinkable texture when blended with milk or another liquid
If your main goal is packing in protein, you can’t go wrong either way. I reach for cottage cheese when I want something extra creamy and neutral or when it’s all I have.

Strawberry Cottage Cheese Smoothie
This strawberry cottage cheese smoothie is creamy, naturally sweet, and packed with an impressive 31 grams of protein without any protein powder. It blends fresh or frozen strawberries with cottage cheese, milk, and a frozen ripe banana for the perfect drinkable texture. If you love high-protein smoothies that still feel simple and homemade, this one is worth trying.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup milk
- ¾ cup cottage cheese
- 1 cup strawberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1 frozen ripe banana, sliced
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal (optional)
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions
- Add the milk to the blender first, if using a personal cup blender that gets flipped over after screwing on top.
- Add strawberries, frozen banana, vanilla and optional ingredients.
- Add the cottage cheese on top, again, if using a personal cup blender that gets flipped over so what's added to the "top" really is the "bottom."
- Blend until smooth, using the smoothie setting if your blender has one.
- Finish with an extra 15–30 seconds of blending to ensure a completely smooth texture.
- Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.
Notes
- Use at least one frozen fruit for the right consistency
- Add more milk if you prefer a thinner texture.
- Ultra-filtered milk has about 60% more protein per serving than regular dairy milk, and increases the total protein in this smoothie recipe to about 31 grams per serving.
- A smaller version (½ cup cottage cheese and ½ cup milk) gives you roughly 21 grams of protein.
