This chocolate peanut butter smoothie has been my favorite “healthy indulgence” lately. It tastes like dessert—rich, chocolatey, and peanut-buttery—but it’s full of protein and made from simple ingredients.

It has all the classic flavors of a peanut butter cup blended into a creamy, frozen smoothie that leaves me satisfied and energized.

The best part is that it’s naturally sweetened with a ripe frozen banana and gets its protein from real-food ingredients like Greek yogurt, powdered peanut butter, and ultra-filtered milk.

I also love using cocoa powder here because you get deep chocolate flavor without adding any sugar.

And honestly, I love knowing I can blend this in a few minutes and stay full for hours, which makes it one of my go-to breakfast smoothies.

If you love a smoothie that tastes indulgent without actually being indulgent, this one is definitely it. I’ve been pairing chocolate and peanut butter forever, and this smoothie is my favorite way to enjoy those flavors in a healthier, high-protein way.

Ingredient Notes

Powdered Peanut Butter:
I use powdered peanut butter because it gives the smoothie great flavor with fewer calories (compared to peanut butter in a jar). It also blends beautifully with no oily texture.

Unsweetened Cocoa Powder:
This is what gives the smoothie a deep chocolate flavor without sugar. Use regular cocoa powder or Dutch-process depending on what you have or prefer.

Plain Non-Fat Greek Yogurt:
Adds protein and creaminess while keeping the smoothie thick and satisfying.

Milk:
I like non-fat Fairlife because it has more protein per cup and less sugar compared to regular milk. But any milk works, so use what you prefer. Just note, it will change the smoothie’s nutritional content.

Frozen Banana:
The banana is the natural sweetener here, so you want one that had lots of brown spots before freezing. As bananas ripen, the starches turn to sugars. This makes the smoothie sweeter and full of banana flavor. Slice it before freezing for easy blending.

Vanilla + Salt:
These are totally optional, but I really do recommend them. Just a touch of each enhances the chocolate flavor and balances the sweetness.

Sweetness Note:
This smoothie gets all its sweetness from the ripe banana. The more brown spots on the peel, the sweeter the result. Keep in mind that this isn’t an overly sweet smoothie which is why I love it.

If you prefer a little more sweetness, you can add a splash of maple syrup, honey, or agave. A pitted date also works for natural sweetness. Sugar or a sugar alternative will work too if that fits your preferences.

My Favorite Smoothie Tip: For the creamiest smoothie, freeze your banana when it’s very ripe. I cut mine into one-inch chunks before freezing which helps them blend much faster and gives the smoothie a thick, milkshake-like texture. Plus, you’ll always have frozen banana ready to go!

How to Make a Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

Detailed recipe and instructions are in recipe card at bottom of post.

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
  3. Taste and adjust sweetness. For a thicker smoothie add more frozen banana, yogurt or a few ice cubes.
  4. Pour into a glass and enjoy right away.

Blender Tip:
If you’re using a personal cup blender, add the liquid ingredients first. Because the cup flips over when blending, this keeps thicker ingredients like yogurt from sticking to the top. I use the smoothie button on my Ninja personal blender (affiliate link, not sponsored), which starts and stops to move ingredients around, then I follow with an extra 15 seconds on high for a silky finish.

Recipe Notes

  • Adjust the sweetness by adding a splash of maple syrup, honey or agave if your banana isn’t quite ripe enough. A pitted date, sugar or sugar alternatives work too.
  • Swap in dairy-free yogurt and milk if needed.
  • Add a few ice cubes for an extra thick texture.
  • A scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder can be added for even more protein.

How to Make a Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Freezer Pack

Meal-prepping freezer packs makes smoothies even faster and perfect for busy mornings.

  • Place powdered peanut butter, cocoa powder, salt, and sliced ripe banana in a small freezer-safe bag.
  • Freeze until ready to use.
  • When it’s smoothie time, add the contents of the pack to your blender along with the yogurt, milk, and vanilla.
  • Blend until smooth.

It’s the easiest way to enjoy a chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie whenever the craving hits.

Why I Don’t Use Protein Powder in My Smoothies

My smoothie goals are simple. I keep added sugars low and protein high. A ripe banana gives natural sweetness, and the sugars in plain yogurt and milk are naturally occurring which keeps everything balanced.

Protein powders can be great for some people, but I prefer using whole-food ingredients. I can get plenty of protein from Greek yogurt, ultra-filtered milk (more nutrient dense than regular milk), nuts, seeds, flax meal, oats, and fruits and vegetables.

Why whole foods work well for me:

  • Great flavor without added sweeteners
  • No artificial sweeteners or soy (often found in protein powders) which I try to avoid
  • Smoothies taste richer and more natural

This approach keeps my smoothies satisfying and wholesome while giving me the protein boost I need.
